Felt York

The Felt York may look like a fixed gear, but it actually has a 2-speed Sturmey-Archer hub. The MSRP is $829.

This is a gorgeous bicycle.  It's a beautiful "Duke" blue with a porteur rack painted to match, with a stained wood base.  The aluminum fenders are polished and even the color of the tires is aesthetically pleasing.  Take a closer look at those tires, though, and you wonder whether they are a bit too skinny (700 x 25) for a bike that poses as one that can heft a full front load. 

That's the real question about the York:  Is it all beauty and no brawn?  A porteur bike should be designed to carry stuff, after all.  This is no cargo bike.

Still, it's beautiful and it may be just the thing for those who wish to cruise around town with the ability to carry light loads.  I'm sure the front rack could carry a six-pack.  I also give Felt lots of credit for trying something different, and for making a piece of art.

A Short Take On The Disc Brake

Disc brakes are the hot new trend for 2012 bikes for the rest of us.  For example, the 2012 Felt Verza City 1 comes standard with disc brakes, front and rear.

Many other '12 models, especially cargo bikes, come with front only disc brakes (your stopping power is in the front).  And for the first time, Surly is offering its venerable Long Haul Trucker with disc brakes - the Disc Trucker.

Of course, disc brakes have been around for awhile now on mountain bikes.  But for transportation bikes, this is something new.  In the midst of this change, Tyler at Bike Radar has raised some important questions, one of which is whether the trend toward disc brakes is driven by consumer demand or actual performance gain.  Interestingly, in introducing the Disc Trucker, Surly said it was responding to consumer demand, and said nothing about improved performance over rim brakes.

Here are a few reasons why, even though you've been getting along just fine all these years with ordinary rim brakes, you might want to consider a bike with disc brakes:

1. You ride in a place with a wet climate. Ordinary rim brakes don’t work as well when wet.

2. You ride in a place with hilly terrain. Disc brakes should help you stop better on a steep descent. "Should" is the key word. More on that in a moment.

3. You ride quite a bit off-road.  Mud and dirt can come between your rims and brakepads and diminish caliper brake performance.

4. You will be carrying heavy load and could use help bringing your fully-loaded rig to a halt. This is why we've been seeing front disc brakes on 2012 cargo bikes.

Felt Verza

A few years ago, Felt caught my attention with its “Cafe” bikes, which we talked about here.  This year Felt introduced its Verza City bikes.  For 2012, the Verza City 1 is back, but Felt has also greatly expanded its Verza line.  

Before we go any further, I have to ask: What does "Verza" mean?  It sounds Italian, but according to google translator, “Verza” is Italian for “savoy cabbage.”

For 2012, Felt is offering three types of Verza bikes: Path, City, and Regency. The Path bikes are aluminum hybrids with suspension forks. Enough said about that. The Verza City and Verza Regency bikes are much more worthy of our attention.

The City 1 is a 6061 double-butted aluminum frame with a Shimano Alfine internal gear hub, disc brakes, fenders, and a rear rack that matches the frame. The MSRP is $1,149. Here are the specs:

• Frame: Felt Verza-City design, 6061 aluminum, hydroformed TT, double butted TT/DT, rack braze-ons, IS disc brake mount w/integrated kickstand mounting holes and replacable derailleur hanger

The Verza City 2 comes with a rear derailer instead of an IGH, but still has front disc brakes, fenders, and a rear rack. The MSRP is $749.

The Verza City 3 is a basic hybrid for $600.  I would definitely splurge and get a City 2 rather than City 3.
