Breezer Doppler Cafe

2018 Breezer Doppler Cafe in pearl yellow and black. Courtesy: breezerbikes.com
The Breezer Doppler Cafe is a butted chromoly steel  650b 11-speed that comes with full fenders.  The MSRP is $1100.

The 650b wheelsize, also called 27.5, has become very popular in the mountain bike world.  At 584 mm, it's the "just right" size for many mountain bikers, in the middle between 26ers (559 mm) and 29ers (622 mm). 650b has also become a popular width for cross and "gravel" bikes.  From a transportation bike standpoint, the advantage of 650b is that it lets you run wider tires for a cushier ride.  Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly raves about the advantages of 650b tires in his "remarkable journey of discovery" series.

Another thing to like about this bike is its 11x1 gearing, which means you get plenty of gear options without having to deal with triple or even double chainrings.  This really simplifies the ride.

Finally, I should admit my bias for retro steel bikes.  This one just looks cool.

And while I'm admitting biases, our love for Breezer should be clear by now.  In looking for bikes that met our standards, we started with Breezer.  Our first bicycle post in Feburary 2008 was about the Breezer Citizen.  Our second post was about the Breezer Uptown. Breezer just makes solid transportation bikes, and they keep getting better and better.

There's been a lot of hype about the Doppler Cafe.  Here's a sampling:

Tern Link P7i and Swoop D7

Tern is a new folding bike company, which split from Dahon. They now offer a wide range of folding bike designs. Similar to Bike Friday and Brompton folding bikes, there are meant for people who want to travel with their bike, who need to keep a bike in small space, or who have a multi-modal commute which does not allow standard-sized bikes.
Tern Link P7i
The Link P7i, "The equipped one" as they say, comes with almost everything you could want. Dynamo hub and lights, a Shimano Nexus 7-speed internal gear hub, rear rack, fenders, and chainguard  (attached directly to the chain) are included. There is a bracket on the front of the frame to attach a bag or front basket, which does not affect the steering. It is available for $1200 at Clever Cycles and other shops.

Tern also sells the Swoop d7i for $1000. It also has a rear rack and optional dynamo lighting, with a 7-speed hub, and a standard chainguard.

And at the high end, they offer an Alfine 11 speed IGH equipped bike with disc brakes and dynamo lighting, the Eclipse S11i:

Shinola

There actually is good news coming out of Detroit these days and it involves watchmaker Shinola, which also happens to be producing elegant, American-made classic lugged steel bikes for the rest of us. They are assembled in Detroit; production is done by Waterford in Wisconsin.

Shinola has done a nice job of creating publicity, most recently with their Shinola Bike Tour.

If you want to read more about Shinola, I recommend Bicycle Retailer and Let's Go Ride A Bike. The latter went on a tour of Shinola's Detroit facility.

Runwell

The Runwell goes for $2,950 (hang in there, Al). It's in the porteur style that is so popular these days (did those old-time Parisian newspaper distributors have any inkling that there bikes would one day be the subject of so much adulation?), and includes an 11-speed Shimano Alfine internal hub, disc brakes, and internal cable routing. Fenders are not included, but Shinola assures us that racks and fenders fit easily on the frame. The chainguard is included.

Here are the specs:
